Apprenticeships for 1.3 million for Government of India

The short version

A five-year-old national apprenticeship portal, redesigned in three months for candidates and the establishments that train them — with AI matching to connect the two.

Outcome

Candidate, establishment and matching journeys rebuilt

SC 01

A national apprenticeship portal — 1.3 million registered candidates, 14,500 active establishments, close to a million open vacancies — built more than five years earlier and showing it.

As experience lead, I led a three-person design team through a three-month redesign: candidates, establishments, and the AI matching that connects them.

SC 02 · Seven years earlier

In 2018, with IBM, I led a small team designing the first and biggest digitalisation of the Skill India mission — training partners, trainers and assessors, placement drives and the citizens they serve, moved from offline processes onto one national portal.

In 2025 I came back to the same mission from the other side: as experience lead at Publicis Sapient, on the national apprenticeship portal.

SC 03 · The ask

The apprenticeship portal connects candidates with establishments that train them on the job. It was built more than five years earlier, on a framework that was no longer supported, and it looked and behaved its age.

The ask was plain: improve the user experience and the process efficiency, and get the portal ready for the scheme's next phase by connecting apprentices and establishments better.

The ask, and the portal we inherited

SC 04 · How we'd judge it

We agreed what ‘better’ meant first: personalised, conversational, designed for all ages, abilities and regions, anticipatory, actionable, and trustworthy.

The plan ran on two tracks at once — a front-end redesign built on a scalable design system, and process improvements to the candidate journey, re-engineering the workflows underneath. A three-person design team, three months.

SC 05 · The front door

The old homepage tried to say everything at once: overcrowded sections, static tables, a desktop-only layout, dull pinks and blues, and no clear hierarchy.

The redesign gives it a logical flow — opportunity, then data, then testimonials, then support — with an interactive opportunities section, cards that work on any screen, and the brand's colour used to draw attention where it matters.

SC 06 · The candidate

Candidates landed on a text-heavy menu where every option weighed the same, a profile-completion table with no sense of progress, and no opportunities in sight unless they went looking.

Now: icon-led navigation grouped by task, a visual stepper for profile completion, the latest opportunities right on the dashboard with ‘Apply now’, and journey stats as cards. Course search got labelled filters, columns that scroll with the action button pinned, and proper pagination.

Candidate dashboard — before and after (1 of 2)Candidate dashboard — before and after (2 of 2)

SC 07 · The establishment

Establishments saw everything at once — a static grid with no grouping and nothing to tell them what mattered.

The new dashboard leads with the KPIs, groups the rest into segmented views with status indicators, and moves navigation into a structured side menu. We also shaped a mobile app for establishments, so the people hiring apprentices don't have to be at a desk to do it.

SC 08 · Matching

Search puts all the work on the candidate. So alongside the redesign we built an AI engine for personalised matching: it reads a candidate's profile, finds the apprenticeships that fit, and suggests them — improving the odds of being shortlisted and cutting the manual search on both sides.

Underneath, the portal moved from Angular 6 to Angular 19, with AI-assisted tooling accelerating the upgrade.

A faster, friendlier portal for apprentices and the establishments that train them — with matching that does part of the searching for them. Built on the same mission I first designed for in 2018.
